Why Medicine & Physiotherapy Mongolia?
Sandwiched between the huge expanses of Russia and China, Mongolia offers real adventure. The modern Mongolian is a descendant of Genghis Khan, an offspring of the Communist era and is living in an ancient nation-state that once rules the whole of Asia. Identifying more with Europeans than Asians, the Mongolian people are proud and very welcoming.
Most of our placements are based in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar, which has the feel of a Soviet city with tower blocks surrounding the focal point of Sukhbaatar Square. Yet on the edge of the city, families live in traditional "Gers."
Medical Volunteering in Mongolia
You will be working in busy central hospitals or specialised clinics in Ulaanbaatar, depending on your preferences. Placements are mostly in government hospitals with Russian-trained doctors, although we can also arrange for you to spend some time in private clinics and with practitioners of traditional medicine. You don't need to be qualified - each placement will be structured to match your ability and knowledge.
Why Volunteer in a Medical Placement?
The medical projects we organise provide our volunteers with an incredibly interesting and eye opening experience. They are able to observe how the medical process works in a developing country, and more than that, they are actively involved in it.
Those who are looking to study medicine at university will find that by shadowing doctors and watching medical procedures they will learn a great amount on a placement and gain experience that would simply not be possible in their home country. The project is also open to elective students and depending on their level of experience it may be possible to assist on a practical level.
The doctors and nurses with whom the volunteers work really enjoy the cultural exchange that is brought by the volunteers and are more than happy for you to be involved in most aspects of their work in the hospital. This placement should be used as a wonderful opportunity to question doctors who are very willing to share their expertise and knowledge.
